There are different varieties of gladiator high heel shoes to choose from as well as what you can wear with them to fit your own style. However, before I talk about gladiator high heels, I would like to talk a little about "gladiators."

When you think or say the word "gladiator" you may think of Rome and the gladiators fighting against the lions -- or even fighting in wars as depicted by Brad Pitt in the movie Troy. For those of you who have not yet seen Brad Pitt in this movie from 2004, here are some pictures from that movie, as well as an extra picture I decided to throw in for you ladies out there for your viewing pleasure!

As you can see, Brad Pitt is not wearing gladiator type shoes while he is being outfitted for his movie scene, so I am unable to use him as a sample for my source as to where the term "gladiator" shoes for women came from. But I can say that his movie is from the gladiator days of early Rome. I can also say that the boot-like top part of his shoes (pictured) may be the basis for current day gladiator style boots.

During my research for this article, I found out that if not at war, gladiators entertained the Romans in power -- which explains why in movies you will see a king, or someone of royal heritage, sitting in the stands, enjoying the gladiator battling lions -- just for their entertainment.

Surprising to me was there were also women gladiators, not in battle, per se, but they entertained the king and the crowd in the early days of Rome. Of course they were eventually phased out of this entertainment venue.

Gladiator High Heels Current Day

Traveling back from the Roman era to current day, we see the term "gladiator" being used, not for Roman warriors and entertainment figures, but for beautifully styled shoes, commonly called gladiator shoes.
