Marilyn Monroe -- What could have been..........

When movie stars leave us at such a young age, we oftentimes ask, what could have been...? Say the name Marilyn Monroe, and it would behoove me to think that anyone would not instantly picture striking one of her famous poses, or playing a scene in one of her many movies.

Marilyn Monroe -- What if?

In the life of Marilyn Monroe, there are a lot of what ifs, beginning with her name, which has become legendary within itself.

What if, Marilyn Monroe had not had not changed her name from Norma Jeane (with an e on Jean) Baker? Would she have reached the same level of iconic stardom that she did?

What if she had stuck with even one of her other names that were suggested for her. No other name seems to fit this legendary movie star in the true sense of the word, other than the name .... Marilyn Monroe.

What if she had stayed in her hometown, married locally and stayed married, living the life of a normal everyday joe -- would she have ended up as only a name in the local newspaper's obituary columns when she died? .

For some reason, I thought that she was born in a little small country town, maybe because of her birth name -- but from my research, she was actually born in Los Angeles, California -- which was a movie town, even back in the 50's.

Somehow, she became enthralled in the maze that was Hollywood, and in so doing, she may have lost who she was really meant to be in life, rather than in death. Her troubled background, which may have involved sexual abuse did not help her situation much.

Marilyn Monroe Movies

I think most of us know about Marilyn Monroe's early beginnings and how she ultimately rose to be one of the greatest Hollywood actress icons in movie history. But did you know about all the struggles she endured to almost get to where she probably wanted to be. I use the term "almost", because during her later movies, according to numerous sources regarding her life, she wanted to be viewed as a serious actor. Even though some of her earlier movies were considered successful, they were mostly successful, because she played her role as a "dumb blonde" so well.

In my view, she was far removed from the personna she portrayed on films. Did you know that she attended the University of California?

Marilyn Monroe -- A Good Actor or Actress?

I use "Actor" here, because some place I read that some actresses prefer to be called actors, because it seemed to lift or rise their status higher in their chosen career of acting. When you say the word "Actor" versus "Actress," the former does sound as if someone is on a higher plain or playing field, as opposed to being referred to as an "Actress", in my opinion.

Marilyn Monroe was greatly admired for her beautiful face and well endowed figure. Her acting abilities may have left something to the imagination in her earlier movies, even though some of her movies won critical acclaim. But she did what most intelligent actors would do. She studied and trained to improve her acting range -- which paid off.

In fact, Marilyn Monroe won a Golden Globe award for her work in Some Like it Hot in 1959. Regarding the "dumb blonde" parts she played, she seemed to be playing the part for which the movie called for, which did not reflect on who she really was. In some of her movies, she played the beautiful blonde who used her beauty to the greatest of her advantage. And it worked!

Some of her most memorable movies that come to mind are The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Some Like It Hot and lots of others, including a western which was her last movie, The Misfits, in 1962.

If something worked the first time, would you try to change it? Of course not. But eventually, you may tire of being the same and doing the same things over and over again. You may want to try something new. I think that is why she opted to play in a western, which, unfortunately, was the last movie she completed in 1961. It was duriing this time that her life as it was slowly began to deteriorate, in some fashion, maybe due to the drugs she was taking and other issues she was going through.

Do you have a favorite Marilyn Monroe movie?

I have a favorite Marilyn Monroe movie, among many. I would like to say that my favorite Marilyn Monroe movie is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I especially like the story as well as the singing and dancing routines that Marilyn Monroe performed so well.

Hats off to the choreography. In fact some of her same dance moves could be seen probably, on shows such as Dancing with the Stars and others in modern day. I would be amiss not to say that another favorite of mine is The Seven Year Itch. That's the movie where she is wearing her infamous white, bellowing dress!

And her soft sultry voice was one that other actresses have tried to either knowingly, or unknowingly copy. An actress that comes to mind is Melanie Griffith -- sort of. Not quite the same soft whispery voice as Marilyn Monroe's, but a very feminine sounding voice, without the high pitches.

Any depth to Marilyn Monroe movies?

If only some of her movies showed the true depth of who she really was. In most of her movies, I saw a, sweet, sexy, blonde woman, who sort of downplayed her intelligence so maybe her beauty would show through clearer? This should not have been a choice that she would have to make. Or maybe she was using what she had to get what she wanted? All I know is that it is sad and tragic that all of the strength, beauty and compassion that was Marilyn Monroe, came through after her death instead of while she was alive.

I think she knew that she was highly intelligent, yet because of the Hollywood industry, along with all of its glittery trappings, she was pushed into the mode of the gorgeous blonde who could get anything she wanted based simply on how beautiful she was.

A Saying for Marilyn Monroe -- He who laughs last...

I checked the meaning of the cliche "He who laughs last, laughs best or laughs the longest." It means simply that even though you may think that you got the last laugh, it's the person you are laughing at, who is ahead of the game. Did Marilyn Monroe know that she would reach such an iconic status, after all the turmoil she endured throughout in her life?

But even with all the struggles that she surely suffered as she battled against the type movies she really wanted to play and those that she was typecasted to play, it looks to me that Marilyn Monroe, gave to us more than we could possibly ask for. She gave us her movies, her pictures, and her legacy that will live on for generations to come.

Marilyn Monore in Ode to Princess Diana

When Elton John sung the Good Bye Norma Jeane song (Candle in the Wind) in the memory of Princess Diana, I found it elusively sad and striking that both Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana would be honored with the same song, both leaving so untimely. If you have never listened to that song, it tells the story of Norma Jeane - Marilyn Monroe's life in such realistic terms, it was like Elton John had actually known her. Listen to the rendition of that song, and I'm sure you will agree with me.

Marilyn Monroe -- What she left

She left a beautiful and tragic story that was Marilyn Monroe the likes of which have not been equaled or surpassed in cinema or movie history.

Marilyn Monroe was undeniably, the most talented, intelligent actress that hit the Hollywood cinema, and though many may try to imitate her, there will, and always will be only one magnificently beautiful Marilyn Monroe.

Marilyn Monroe's legend speaks for itself....
