Ahhh.... Marilyn Monroe. Her name brings visions of beauty, often imitated but in no way has her beauty ever been duplicated. The one thing, I think, that sets Marilyn Monroe apart from the other beautiful and talented actors in her era was her amazing sense of style.

When I think about all of her movies, I see her impeccably dressed, always so elegant and stylish.

I could talk to you about Marilyn Monroe's sense of fashion and style including her sexy high heels when I'm on the subject of Mariilyn Monroe, but what other easier and simpler way to inform you about the beautiful woman who was Marilyn Monroe than by dissecting her fashions in gorgeous details.

The detail I will be focusing on in this article is Marilyn Monroe and the pencil skirt. I will also bring her styles back up to the future (as opposed to back to the future!), so you, yourself can be a part of her stylish regime.

If you happen to be of the male persuasion as a reader of my article, then there is something in my article for you too. No need to admire Marilyn Monroe and her beautiful, sexy styles from afar. Why not give that special lady of yours one of Marilyn Monroe's inspired fashion. What? No special lady. Then just simply enjoy looking and learning more about the stylish legend of Marilyn Monroe, even if it is for the sake of learning. I think we all gain and benefit from what we learn!

As a footnote, I will concentrate more on Marilyn Monroe's pencil skirt fashions rather than the beautiful legend herself. Want to learn more about Marilyn Monroe? Then please visit my other website where my article is located dedicated to Marilyn Monroe entitled: Marilyn Monroe: Her Beautiful, Yet Tragic Story -- after reading my article here, of course.

The Pencil Skirt

The pencil skirts are the sexy straight skirts worn by the beautiful Marilyn Monroe and other fashionable women of past as well as present tiimes. The pencil skirt is sometimes set off by a kick-split in the back center and even in the front. The overall similarity of all pencil skirts is the straight, slim, sexy design!

The pencil skirt is excellent to wear with your favorite high heels! They make a splendid combination! Just slip on a pencil skirt, tall, fashionable high heels and you will look as if you are ready for the runway!

The eye-catching fashions you are wearing are the pencil skirt and high heels, even though a cute top would certainly complete the look.

In my opinion, the narrower the pencil skirt you can wear, the better. But not too tight! Do you recall from maybe reruns of the Carol Burnett show where she plays a funny secretary who is always filing her nails while at her desk instead of working. Do you remember the straight black skirt she wore that was very tight to the point that she had to bend down forward as she walked, which made for a hilarious sight. This look is good for comedy, but the look you are going for is refined, elegant, sexy and stylish.

So choose a pencil skirt that is narrow, but has enough girth at the hemline to allow you to walk fashionably straight and tall. In fact, as I mentioned earlier, some pencil skirts have pleats or slits in the back and side to their styling which will provide you more room to move your legs. Unable to decide if you prefer the slits, pleats, or maybe you prefer no slits or pleats at all? Then that is just fine. Lots of pencil skirts are styled, just straight with no slits or pleats!

To add variety to your pencil skirt wardrobe, of course you can always get an assortment of different styles and colors!

Length?

I think the length of the pencil skirt is what makes it stand out from the other type skirts. At no time should a pencil skirt be the short length of a mini-skirt. If so, then it is no longer a pencil skirt, but becomes a mini skirt, instead.

The proper length is just above the knee, and can also be worn just below the knee. I prefer the length to be above the knees because this length tends to give more view of your legs, which also will seem longer and slender.

Belts?

Yes, by all means your pencil skirt can be worn with a belt. The current style is a much wider belt than worn during previous years. I've also seen pencil skirts worn with a narrow belt, or no belt at all. It is all up to you and your fashion sense regarding whether or not you plan to wear a wide or narrow belt, or you may decide not to wear a belt at all.

How should the top be worn?

To accentuate the straighness of the skirt, any top you wear sould be tucked in at the waist, and not worn loosely outside of the skirt. The whole idea of a pencil skirt is to show off the flatness of your abs, and the slimness of your small waist. You do not want to ruin the look by wearing an overly large shirt, top or blouse with your pencil skirt.

Colors?

Black is no doubt the most popular color selection for the pencil skirt due to the versatility the color affords when selecting a top to complement your outfit. As they say, black goes with everything!

Of course, for variety, you will want to have various styles and colors of the pencil skirt. Also, during the winter months, you should try out different fabric textures for the pencil skirt, including tweed, wool, and others.

Back to Marilyn Monroe!

During many of Marily Monroe's movies, she wore stylish dresses where the skirt portion could easily be a modern day pencil skirt. The dress that comes to mind is the black and white dress she wore in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes." The skirt was just the right length, and she wore it with the proper fit.

In fact most of her dresses were styled with the pencil skirt bottom, made complete of course by her high heels.

What's your style?

Do you prefer pencil skirts to be just straight, with a front split or a side split? What about colors? Do you have a favorite color that you wear often? However you respond to these questions, there are pencil skirts to fit your individual style and preferences.

Maybe you do not have a pencil skirt at all. If this is the case, now is the time to make your fashionable wardrobe even more fashionable by adding pencil skirts to your ensemble.

Fashionable during Marilyn Monroe's era, I'm sure the pencil skirt will keep its coveted place in the fashion world today, and for many more years to come!
